The Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) tree grows rapidly and to greater size than most other Cherry trees, up to approximately 25m. It prefers clay soils over chalk and is a common component in native woodlands.

In spring there is an abundance of pretty white blossom attracting bees and insects. The fruits are usually dark red and may be sweet or sour when ripe and if not harvested will attract birds. In ancient Scottish folklore the Wild Cherry had mystical qualities and to encounter one was considered fateful and auspicious.

The current height of these trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.

The Silver Birch (Betula Pendula) is a very popular and easily recognisable tree with it’s silvery-white bark. The Silver Birch tree is native to much of England, Scotland and Wales. It is one of the faster growing and establishing deciduous trees reaching a reasonable height within 10 years. They can grow up to 25m. In Scottish folklore a barren cow, herded with a birch stick, would then fall pregnant bearing a healthy calf.

The Silver Birch is particularly hardy in damp areas. Known as the “lady of the woods” with fine silvery bark and catkins in spring with fine green leaves in summer which turn a pretty yellow in autumn. Flourishes in both wet and dry and exposed areas.

The current height of these trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.

Also known as the Mountain Ash, the Rowan tree (Sorbus Aucuparia) is a very popular fast growing native tree, reaching up to 20m. Attractive red berries and leaves turn an attractive shade of orange in autumn.

In folklore the Rowan is one of the most magical and mystical of trees believed to ward off witches and evil spirits and considered so sacred that they were rarely cut down or burnt.

The current height of these trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.
